War is not the way to deal with problems in Afghanistan, says former hostage

War and aggression is not the way to deal with problems in Afghanistan, former hostage Terry Waite has said. He said that we sometimes have to recognise our limitations, and “cannot police the whole world”. Tthe 82-year-old, of Hartest, Suffolk, was released from captivity in Beirut on November 18 1991, nearly five years after being kidnapped by Islamic Jihad while working as a hostage negotiator. He is the co-founder of the charity Hostage International, which says on its website that it offers “independent emotional and practical support to families affected by a loved one held hostage, and to returning hostages”. To mark the 30th anniversary of his release from captivity, the charity is holding a fundraising event called Beirut and Back.
