Virgil van Dijk has given a broad hint that he is closing in on a return to action after posting a video showing him in training at Liverpool's training base.

Van Dijk has been out of action since injuring knee ligaments in last October's Merseyside derby against Everton at Goodison Park, with his absence contributing to an alarming decline in fortunes for the Premier League champions.

Liverpool have lost five successive home matches for the first time in the club's history and are facing a real battle to secure a top four finish in the Premier League.

Yet the sight of Van Dijk edging ever closer to a comeback will remind manager Jurgen Klopp and the club's fans that brighter times could be on their horizon.

The latest post on his Instagram account saw footage of Van Dijk running and shooting at a goal, yet the side to side movement that is always the final steps in the recovery of an injury of this nature do not appear to have started yet.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has hinted he is not expecting Van Dijk to play again this season, with any potential return likely to be in May at the earliest.

That opens the prospect of Van Dijk making a return to Liverpool's injury-hit defence if they make it through to the Champions League final in Istanbul on May 29th, with Klopp's decision to leave the defender in his squad for that competition evidence that he is leaving the door open for an unexpected return.
