Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has posted a fresh update as he continues his recovery from his long-term knee injury and it appears he is closing in on a first team return.

The Dutch defender has been out of action since sustaining a cruciate knee ligament injury in October, but he is believed to be in the final month of his rehabilitation programme.

After previous videos showed him making small steps towards a first team return, the sight of Van Dijk running at Liverpool's AXA Training Centre suggests he is getting closer to a return to training.

Sideways movement is always the final step with this type of injury, but it is clear that he may soon be getting ready to take that next stride.

Holland boss Frank De Boer has hinted he is hopeful of having Van Dijk available for this summer's European Championship finals, with Liverpool certain to have reservations if the player is called up by his national team.

"I have spoken to him, he is going to the field. There can be all kinds of setbacks. A week or two of setbacks could mean he can’t play games for Liverpool," De Boer said earlier this month.

"Then I can imagine that they say: 'Nice, but you can focus on next season.' Ultimately, he must have a good feeling himself. I’m glad he’s on the right track.

"We will see. I’m not putting any pressure on him at all. He must do it himself and must have confidence in it himself. The choice mainly lies with him."
