The champions League is rapidly edging towards the business end of the competition and Virgin Media Sport host Tommy Martin has given sundayworld.com his verdict on this week's matches.

Chelsea (1) v Atletico Madrid (0)

Has Thomas Tuchel turned Chelsea into genuine Champions League contenders?

They are defending like potential European champions. Keeping the back door shut is key to a run in this competition – nine clean sheets in eleven games under Tuchel shows they’ve got that bit right.

Atletico under Diego Simeone have been the masters of grinding out narrow wins in Europe – it was an approach that got them to Champions League finals in 2014 and 2016 – but Tuchel came out the right side of the first leg chess match. In studio, Damien Delaney criticised Atletico’s lack of adventure, but that’s nothing new from them.

This game could be more of the same. Despite Atletico needing a goal, don’t expect them to go gung-ho. Neither will Tuchel’s Chelsea. It could be one of those long, tense European nights that we all love. Yet another clean sheet would do nicely for Chelsea.

Bayern (4) v Lazio (1)

A bit like Manchester City, Bayern are already thinking about Friday’s draw. After a draw and a defeat in their two previous games – an epic crisis by Bayern standards – the first leg against Lazio was another chance for Bayern to show just how good they can be.

They outclassed the Serie A side, passing them off the park when they had the ball, pressing them to distraction when they didn’t. Damien felt that after so much success, Bayern needed the buzz of Champions League nights to get them back to their best – and if they get to that level in the rounds to come it will take a very good team to stop them.
