Paris Saint-Germain have activated an option to extend the contract of head coach Mauricio Pochettino, but it does not mean he will not leave the club in the coming days.

After a weekend of claim and counter claim, widespread reports in Spain suggest Pochettino has asked to be allowed to leave PSG, after it was confirmed he has been approached by Tottenham to return to the north London club.

Real Madrid are also believed to be keen to recruit Pochettino to replace the departed Zinedine Zidane, who left his role with the Spanish giants earlier this month.

Now PSG have ensured they will be entitled to be big pay-out if Pochettino leaves for either Spurs or Real Madrid, with sporting director Leonardo confirming his club has triggered an extension clause in the contract of their head coach.

"Mauricio Pochettino has a two-year contract and we are very happy," said Leonardo on Sunday, but he would not be drawn on whether the coach would leave PSG this summer if a compensation package could be agreed.

Pochettino's current deal was due to expire in the summer of 2022, but he is now tied to the club for an extra year and the French club are expected to demand a fee of around €10million to secure his services.

There are suggestions that Pochettino has already told PSG of his intention to leave the club, but it is unclear whether he prefers a return to Tottenham or a switch to Real Madrid.
