Marcus Rashford could be involved in a behind-closed-doors friendly during the international break as he targets a long-awaited return to action in the middle of next month.

The Manchester United striker has been sidelined since undergoing surgery on his left shoulder on August 6 that forced him to miss the start of the season.

Rashford is due to have a consultation with doctors on Friday and, assuming there are no complications, is expected to be given the go-ahead to resume contact training.

If he comes through the friendly unscathed, he could be included in the squad for the trip to Leicester in the Premier League on October 16. Failing that, the 23-year-old will hope to be involved in some capacity against Atalanta in the Champions League four days later and/or Liverpool at Old Trafford the following Sunday. Rashford was not forecast to return until the end of next month after initially being ruled out for up to 12 weeks but his recovery is ahead of schedule.

It is understood that the lengthy lay-off has allowed time for a ligament tear in his ankle to fully heal. He still has a very small piece of floating bone in an ankle but it is not believed to be causing any trouble.

Rashford tweeted: “Happy Monday. I see the doctor on Friday for a consultation. All being well, I will get the green [light] to join in with contact training again.”
