Manchester City and Liverpool preparing to add chapters to their thrilling rivalry

It is a rivalry that will reach a thrilling crescendo over the course of the next few weeks, with Liverpool and Manchester City set to battle it out for Champions League, Premier League and FA cup glory.

Here, sundayworld.com looks back over some of their recent clashes, with a new entry in this story set to be added when the two sides meet in a potential Premier League title decider at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

Liverpool: 2 Manchester City: 2 - October 3rd 2021

The most recent meeting between the two sides was an epic, battle, with Liverpool maintaining their unbeaten start despite the visitors coming from behind twice in an entertaining draw at Anfield.

The hosts took the lead on 59 minutes, as Sadio Mane fired in his 99th Premier League goal following some good play from Salah. City levelled on 69 minutes through a quality Phil Foden finish from a very difficult angle after Gabriel Jesus had found him.

A sensational solo effort from Egyptian International Mohammed Salah, who beat four City players and fired in a shot off the post from a very tight angle put Liverpool back in front on 76 Minutes.

Kevin De Bryune equalised five minutes later with a fine finish from the edge of the box in a game that was instantly hailed as a Premier League classic.

Liverpool: 1 Manchester City: 4 - February 7th 2021

Manchester City exposed Liverpool's defensive frailties with a convincing win at an empty Anfield, with Ilkay Gundogan scoring two second-half goals as City claimed a top-flight-record-equalling 14th successive win in all competitions.

Gundogan missed a first half penalty, but made amendments for the visitors four minutes after the restart, after netting the rebound from Phil Foden’s shot. The hosts equalised on 63 minutes, Mo Salah made no mistake from the penalty spot with a rocket finish after the Egyptian international was fouled by City defender Ruben Dias.

Gundogan then swung the game back in City's favour as he was played in by Foden to convert a close-range effort after a defensive mix up on 73 minutes before Raheem Sterling’s diving header from a shocking Allison clearance made the score 3-1. Phil Foden completed City’s infamous win with a wonder strike as Pep Guardiola claimed his first win as a manager at Anfield.

Liverpool: 3 Manchester City: 1 - November 10th 2019

Liverpool went into this game needing a win to take them eight points clear at the top of the Premier League and they rammed home their advantage at the top of the table in stunning fashion..

After six minutes on the clock, Fabinho opened the scoring for Liverpool with a screaming long-range effort, before Jurgen Klopp's side made it 2-0 as a fine cross by Andy Robertson was finished off by Mohammed Salah.

It was game over as Claudio Bravo couldn’t keep out Sadio Mane’s header and the ball ended up in the back of the net for the third time of the afternoon after 51 minutes, with a late Bernado Silva strike only a consolation for City.

Manchester City: 1 Liverpool: 2 (Agg 1-5) - April 10th 2018

Liverpool reached their first Champions League semi-final for 10 years after coming from behind to win at Manchester City.

The host’s made the perfect start as they tried to reel in a 3-0 deficit from the first leg at Anfield a week earlier, as Sterling set up Gabriel Jesus for a calm finish after only two minutes on the clock.

Yet City lost momentum and the visitors delivered a killer of an away goal when Mohamed Salah chipped in his 39th goal of the season after a powerful run from Mane in the 56th minute.

Roberto Firmino’s goal 13 minutes from time completed the come back and saw Liverpool reach the Champions League semi-final for the first time in 10 years.

Liverpool: 4 Manchester City: 3 - January 14th 2018

Liverpool became the first team to inflict a defeat league leaders Manchester City in the Premier League in the 2018/19 season as they secured a 4-3 win against the reigning champions.

The match was level at half time as Leroy Sane's strike rocked Liverpool after Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain had given them a ninth minute lead.

Liverpool looked to be heading towards a convincing win at Anfield with three superb goals from Firmino, Mane and Mohammed Salah gave the home side a comfortable 4-1 lead, yet late goals from Bernado Silva and Ilkay Gundogan set nerves jangling.

Despite the result, City were still 15 points clear at the top of the Premier League.
