Manchester City exposed Liverpool's defensive frailties with a convincing win at an empty Anfield, with Ilkay Gundogan scoring two second-half goals as City claimed a top-flight-record-equalling 14th successive win in all competitions.

Gundogan missed a first half penalty, but made amendments for the visitors four minutes after the restart, after netting the rebound from Phil Foden’s shot. The hosts equalised on 63 minutes, Mo Salah made no mistake from the penalty spot with a rocket finish after the Egyptian international was fouled by City defender Ruben Dias.

Gundogan then swung the game back in City's favour as he was played in by Foden to convert a close-range effort after a defensive mix up on 73 minutes before Raheem Sterling’s diving header from a shocking Allison clearance made the score 3-1. Phil Foden completed City’s infamous win with a wonder strike as Pep Guardiola claimed his first win as a manager at Anfield.

Liverpool went into this game needing a win to take them eight points clear at the top of the Premier League and they rammed home their advantage at the top of the table in stunning fashion..

After six minutes on the clock, Fabinho opened the scoring for Liverpool with a screaming long-range effort, before Jurgen Klopp's side made it 2-0 as a fine cross by Andy Robertson was finished off by Mohammed Salah.

It was game over as Claudio Bravo couldn’t keep out Sadio Mane’s header and the ball ended up in the back of the net for the third time of the afternoon after 51 minutes, with a late Bernado Silva strike only a consolation for City.

Liverpool reached their first Champions League semi-final for 10 years after coming from behind to win at Manchester City.

Liverpool: 4 Manchester City: 3 - January 14th 2018

Liverpool became the first team to inflict a defeat league leaders Manchester City in the Premier League in the 2018/19 season as they secured a 4-3 win against the reigning champions.

The match was level at half time as Leroy Sane's strike rocked Liverpool after Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain had given them a ninth minute lead.

Liverpool looked to be heading towards a convincing win at Anfield with three superb goals from Firmino, Mane and Mohammed Salah gave the home side a comfortable 4-1 lead, yet late goals from Bernado Silva and Ilkay Gundogan set nerves jangling.

Despite the result, City were still 15 points clear at the top of the Premier League.
