Liverpool have unveiled their new home kit for the 2021/22 season, with a returning hero fronting up the campaign to promote the new red strip.

Virgil van Dijk was the player picked to lead a video to promote the new kit, with the defender who has missed most of this season due to a knee injury set to return to action in August.

Taking inspiration from the 1964 season, when the Reds were under the management and instruction of Bill Shankly, the new kit is very much from the Liverpool traditions.

In 1964, the club introduced a full-flooded red kit for the first time in the club's history on the basis it would provide them with a psychological edge, with Shankly famously saying that 'red is for danger and red is for power'. This set the foundation for their dominance for years to come.

"It's great to see the perfect blend of our heritage and Nike's product innovation for our new home kit," said Van Dijk.

"Being part of the swoosh family for years, they’ve been at the forefront of sustainable design and it goes a long way into making our sport a greener one. I can’t wait for the fans to see it in person next season."

Liverpool fans will be hoping the new kit is on display in the Champions League next season, with Jurgen Klopp's side needing to beat Crystal Palace on Sunday to secure a top four finish in the Premier League.
