There have been no updates on Mohamed Salah's contract talks with Liverpool, but one Anfield great has suggested all parties are united on one key issue.

Salah's current deal is due to expire on the summer of 2023, with his agent Ramy Abbas staging initial talks with Liverpool chiefs over extending his contract.

The Egyptian's status as one of the world's in-form players ensures he can demand a huge pay rise and bonus to sign the new deal, with former Liverpool winger Steve McManaman telling the sundayworld.com earlier this year that Salah's wage demands may force him to leave.

Now McManaman has suggested he has heard positive sentiments from Anfield insiders, with all parties keen to reach agreement on a new contract.

"His contract situation is as it is – we all know it’s going to be up in 18 months' time," McManaman told talkSPORT. "Liverpool want to renew. I think he wants to stay.

"It all depends on the finances: how much he wants and how much Liverpool are prepared to pay.

"We know that they don’t pay the most money. They certainly pay a lot of money across the board, but we know that they don’t pay a huge amount of money and can’t challenge the likes of Paris Saint-Germain or Real Madrid in paying individuals.

"So, we'll wait and see how it pans out. All the talk that I’ve heard is that he wants to stay and Liverpool wants him to stay.

"It's just about getting the right figure, agreeing the right figure, and moving forward."

sundayworld.com understands there is a 'big gap' between the financial expectations of Salah's camp and Liverpool's offer, with big concessions needed on both sides for a deal to be finalised.

"Liverpool need to keep all their best players and he is one of them," former Liverpool striker and Sunday World columnist John Aldridge. "He is on big money, probably the highest paid player. Whatever he wants, they have to work it out between them

"I wonder how much money footballer want at the end of their career? I wonder how much cash people need to be happy and it borders on greed at times, but some players are very, very greedy.

"Liverpool need to sort Salah’s future out in the next few weeks, and if he isn’t going to sign a new deal, then a big decision has to be made on what happens next.

"The Liverpool fans will not forgive the owners if they allow Salah to leave and they have to realise it will cost more to replace a player of his class than to give him a new deal."
