Thiago Alcantara is edging closer to a first team return with Liverpool, but Jurgen Klopp has admitted Wednesday night's game at Newcastle may come too soon for him.

Thiago has not played since the Merseyside derby in early October, when he suffered a knee injury following a challenge from Everton's Richarlison.

sundayworld.com revealed earlier this month that he was closing in a return to first team training and while he is now working with Klopp's first team squad, the Spain international does not look ready to play a role at Newcastle.

"I like watching all my boys playing and with Thiago, of course he had a few minutes, I would say, until he got injured," said Klopp.

"So of course we are looking forward to that, but I don’t know. It’s not really likely that he will travel (to Newcastle), let me say it like this.

"He needs a few sessions, he was really out for a long time after a really harsh challenge – that was a proper impact.

"Nothing ruptured, nothing broken, but that still took time obviously and it still takes time. We cannot rush that, we will not do. So I don’t know."

Liverpool's game at Southampton on Monday looks set to be a likely return date for Thiago, with his availability a huge boost to Klopp as he looks to shuffle his pack amid a packed fixture list.

Klopp and Liverpool are still waiting to hear the results of scans that will reveal the extent of defender Joel Matip's latest injury, with the defender certain to miss the Newcastle game after he picked up the problem in last Sunday's 1-1 draw at West Bromwich Albion.
