Liverpool look set to perform a U-turn and hand Jordan Henderson an extended contract to stay at the club, after manager Jurgen Klopp stepped in to resolve the stand-off.

David Ornstein from The Athletic broke the story confirming Liverpool will hand 31-year-old Henderson the new contract he and his advisers wanted, after initial talks with the Reds skipper reached an impasse earlier this summer.

Now Henderson is close to agreeing a deal that will see him spend the final years of his career at the top level of the game at Anfield, with a three-year deal now in the table and an option for a fourth to be added depending on appearances and his fitness levels in 2024.

Henderson has struggled with injuries in recent months and Liverpool's owners have a policy of being reluctant to hand extended contracts to players over the age of 30.

Yet Klopp's intervention and Henderson's status as a legendary Liverpool captain who lifted the Champions League trophy in 2019 and the Premier League silverware a year later ensured Klopp would not allow the 31-year-old midfielder to leave the club.

"It will happen,' declared Klopp, when asked about Henderson's new contract last Friday. "We will sort it, we will sort it – however it will be then. But we will sort it, no doubt about that. It will get sorted."

If Henderson renews his deal, he will follow Alisson Becker, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Fabinho and Virgil van Dijk by signing new contracts this summer.
