Chelsea legend Joe Cole believes there is space for both Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner in the Blues squad next season, as he urged the club to make a move to bring the Belgian forward back to Stamford Bridge.

Werner has struggled to make his mark in a challenging debut season at Chelsea, as he finish the Premier League campaign with just six Premier League goals and a host of glaring misses in front of goal.

Meanwhile, Lukaku's goals fired Inter Milan to the Serie A title, yet the exit of head coach Antonio Conte and reports that the Italian champions are looking to raise funds through the sale of players has opened the door for Chelsea to make their move.

After sundayworld.com revealed that Lukaku is on Chelsea's wanted list for this summer, Cole has now given his backing to the return of a striker who struggled to make his mark in a spell with the west London club a decade ago.

"If Lukaku is available for the right price, I think Chelsea would take him," Cole told sundayworld.com at a BT Sport event.

"He's one of the top strikers out there. For me, there is space for Lukaku and Werner at Chelsea because they both offer different things. You want quality players in and around the box because if chances come their way, they will take them.

"You need options to win titles. City need (Sergio) Aguero, (Kevin) De Bruyne and (Ilkay) Gundogan... they all offer something different and that's why City are so tough to beat.

"They are playing with a false No.9 and not an out and our striker right now, but it works for them. Liverpool play with Salah, Mane and Firmino and none of them are central strikers and if you have the right players, it can be effective. City certainly have that."

Meanwhile, Cole is backing Werner to shine in Saturday's Champions League final against Pep Guardiola's Manchester City, as he believes the German's dynamic attacking style could key a key to victory for Thomas Tuchel's men.

"Pep players a certain way and if you can get players in behind them, you are going to get space at some point in the game," he stated.

"Timo Werner will probably start, as he is a player who can hurt them and I don't think he is playing for his future at Chelsea in this game.

"We see great players come to this country and they take some time to settle down. It's been difficult for everyone this season, but there have been some great signs from him in the last few weeks. He affects the game and I think he's going to be a good player for Chelsea and some time to improve."

Cole was a starter for Chelsea in the 2008 Champions League final against Manchester United, when John Terry's miss in the penalty shoot-out denied the club what would have been a first victory in the competition.

As he reflects on that famous night in the Moscow rain, he says the importance of the fixture makes it tough to embrace the occasion.

"That game was so intense," he says. "We were playing against our big rivals who we had gone back and forth with over the previous few years, so it was very difficult to enjoy the occasion.

"It's a privilege to play in that type of game. It's the absolute pinnacle, but it wasn't an enjoyable experience, to say the least.

"That Man United side that beat us, the only consolation for me is it was the width of a post that denied is and they were probably the best Premier League side I played against."
