Footballer John Egan returned to Cork on Monday to train kids after his heroic success at the World Cup qualifiers in Luxembourg.

The 29-year-old was part of the Republic of Ireland side that won three-nil at the Stade de Luxembourg on Sunday evening.

Egan started his footballing career at Cork city’s Greenwood FC when he was just 7 years old and makes it back there whenever he can.

The Sheffield United man set up an academy for children aged 5 to 10, who train on a Monday evening from 6pm-7pm, with around 120 kids attending every week.

Egan’s return to Greenwood FC on Monday was shared on Twitter by sports writer Paul Dollery, who said: “Less than 24 hours since playing in a World Cup qualifier in Luxembourg, @JohnEgan92 coaching the kids back home at @greenwoodfc in Cork.”

Speaking about the footballer’s appearance at training last night, Club Chairman Kieran McCoy told Cork Beo: “I arrived down to the academy and there he was training the under-7s team.

“I had no idea he was coming - training runs from 6 to 7 and he was still there at half past 7 taking pictures and signing autographs for the kids.

“John will always pop down to the club whenever he is at home in Cork,” he added.
