Harry Kane declared Tottenham are Premier League title contenders after a stunning 2-0 win against Manchester City.

Goals from Son Heung-min and Giovani Lo Celso eased Spurs to top spot in the Premier League standings, on a night when Pep Guardiola's City fluffed their lines in alarming fashion.

"We are top of the league now and obviously we want to stay there," declared Kane.

"This is not a normal Premier League League season, as we can see from the table. There are a lot of strange results this season.

"So whoever can put a good spell together can have a good chance of winning it. Hopefully we can keep it up.

"We know there's a long way to go but if you go top it shows you are doing the right thing. We just have to take confidence from these games into the games coming up.

"We knew they would have more possession than us, we didn't quite move the ball as much as we wanted. Sometimes when you get a goal early the tendency is to drop off. But we knew would get chances on the counter and we got one to finish the game off nicely."

This was a classic Mourinho tactical masterclass as he got the better of his old foe Guardiola once again, with Kane confirming Tottenham's eagerness to stop City with a high energy pressing game worked to perfection.

"We had a game plan to play as a unit," he added. "Everyone worked their socks off today. We took our chance, Sonny with a great goal. And then we knew it would open up in the second half

"I knew if I dropped deep then the centre-backs would come with me and Sonny could run in behind. We dropped deep, probably more than we needed to, but we changed that at half-time.

"It's a season where you've got to do all it takes to win games. It's going to be an up and down year. There's no better feeling when you win. We'll enjoy it, but we know we've got a long way to go.

"We're doing well, there's still parts we can improve on. We've got a lot of tough games to go. It's a more open league. Like any season, whoever can put a good spell together will have a good chance of winning."

Mourinho wanted to pour praise on his players after a big victory, as he played down the excitement of seeing his side as Premier League leaders.

"It feels good to be top, but maybe tomorrow we are second again and honestly that would not be a problem for me, I am just happy with the evolution," he stated.

"People cannot expect us to come here and after one season we are fighting for the title. We are not fighting for the title, we are just fighting to win every match. But we are going to lose matches, we are going to draw matches.

"Dinner tonight will be nice and relaxed and I will watch Atletico Madrid v Barcelona and sleep like an angel."
