Tottenham have resumed their search for a new manager after talks with Gennaro Gattuso broke down.

The Italian was in the frame for the job after Spurs pulled out of the race for former Roma manager Paulo Fonseca, but his potential appointment was met with fierce criticism from supporters.

He was the fifth head coach considered by Spurs chairman Daniel Levy, with negotiations having previously collapsed with former manager Mauricio Pochettino and Antonio Conte, while Erik ten Hag signed a new contract at Ajax.

Gattuso left Fiorentina after 22 days in charge and was known to new Spurs director of football Fabio Paratici, but did not meet the approval of the club’s fan base. The hashtag #NoToGattuso started trending as fans vented their disapproval of the negotiations with the former Italy midfielder, with several concerned by his past comments regarding women in football and same-sex marriage.

Fans also pointed out his poor record, having previously had unimpressive stints with Pisa, AC Milan and Napoli.

Former Spurs striker Jurgen Klinsmann, who has managed Germany, Bayern Munich and the United States, last night confirmed his interest in the job.
