Conor McGregor has claimed he has held talks with Celtic principal shareholder Dermot Desmond over taking a stake in the Scottish giants.

The MMA star and part-time boxer sparked a debate when he suggested on social media that he was interesting in buying Manchester United, but the extravagant price tag on the Old Trafford club would appear to rule that idea out.

Now McGregor has claimed a more realistic option of buying into Celtic could be on his agenda, as he offered up a response to a question Twitter.

Celtic have yet to offer any response to McGregor's claim, but the Dubliner is flushed with cash after selling his stake in Proper No. Twelve whiskey in a deal reported to be worth $600m last month.

Proximo Spirits, a company that owns Jose Cuervo and other alcohol brands, acquired a majority stake in the whiskey brand, with McGregor and his partners in the venture reaping handsome rewards.

It remains to be seen whether he is serious about buying a stake in Celtic, as he prepares to make another UFC comeback after posting an image of his latest training session in the UAE.
