Chelsea are expected to confirm the signing of Romelu Lukaku after talks with Inter Milan reached a successful conclusion on Saturday.

A fee in excess of €100million was being demanded by Inter for their star striker, who has confirmed he is keen to seal a move back to Stamford Bridge.

Lukaku will join Chelsea for a second time after initially arriving at the club in 2011, but he failed to make his mark at what was a formative stage of his career.

He also struggled to get into the Blues' line-up when he returned from loan spells with West Brom and eventually moved to Everton on loan before joining Manchester United in a big money deal in 2017.

Lukaku guided Inter Milan to the Serie A title last season and the Italian club were keen to hang on to their talisman, but the financial muscle of the Premier League has seen another star player leave to join the English top flight.

Chelsea made moves to try and sign Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland this summer, but the German club refused to negotiate a transfer and that saw the European champions switch their attention to Lukaku.

The striker is a firm favourite of Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich and while manager Thomas Tuchel was reluctant to speak about the player earlier this week, he could have been describing Lukaku with these comments.

"Romelu Lukaku is a fantastic player but he’s an Inter player and, with all due respect, I will not talk about him in this situation," said Tuchel.

"With the exit of Olivier Giroud, we could use a type player who is used to playing with their back to the goal and can keep possession out of long balls as that means we can add this direct style of play to our portfolio."

Now it looks like Tuchel will get the striker he wants, but Chelsea are unlikely to get the deal signed in time for Lukaku to make his debut in Wednesday night's UEFA Super Cup game against Villarreal in Belfast.
