Barcelona have sacked Ronald Koeman following Wednesday’s defeat to Rayo Vallecano.

The 58-year-old was already under pressure after his side lost to Real Madrid at the weekend and this latest reverse proved the final straw for the board.

"FC Barcelona has relieved Ronald Koeman of his duties as first-team coach," an official club statement read following the 1-0 loss.

Koeman, who was only appointed in August of last year, will get the chance to say goodbye to the squad on Thursday.

The statement continued: "The president of the club, Joan Laporta, informed him of the decision after the defeat against Rayo Vallecano. Ronald Koeman will say goodbye to the squad on Thursday at the Ciutat Esportiva.

"FC Barcelona wishes to thank him for his service to the club and wishes him all the best in his professional career."

Former Manchester United and Chelsea forward Radamel Falcao’s first-half strike was enough to condemn Barca to a fourth defeat in six matches.

Koeman’s misery was compounded when Memphis Depay missed a penalty with 18 minutes remaining.

Barcelona are ninth in LaLiga, six points behind leaders Real Madrid who were held to a surprise 0-0 draw at home to Osasuna.

Former Barca midfielder Xavi Hernandez is the hot favourite to replace Koeman at the Nou Camp.
