Antonio Conte has outlined the reasons for his decision to accept the task of reviving Tottenham, after his first game in charge gave a glimpse of the task he has taken on as his side won 3-2 against Vitesse Arnhem in the Europa Conference League.

Conte was taking charge of his first game since being appointed as Spurs’ new boss following Nuno Espirito Santo’s dismissal on Monday and his new side quickly moved into a three goal lead.

Son Heung-min, who scored the first goal of both Jose Mourinho’s and Nuno’s reigns, did the same for Conte in the 14th minute before Lucas Moura and a Jacob Rasmussen own goal seemingly had the hosts in total control.

Yet life is just not that simple in north London right now and Rasmussen scored at the other end before Matus Bero further reduced the arrears.

Cristian Romero’s red card on the hour put Spurs further on the back foot and it was only when Danilho Doekhi and Markus Schubert were sent off for Vitesse in the final 10 minutes that they were able to get control of the game.

Conte will have been left in no doubt over the size of job he has on his hands and must now prepare for a Premier League trip to Everton on Sunday.

"My first impression, it was a crazy game a crazy game because we were winning 3-0 and I think we were dominating the game, created many chances to score," he began.

"Instead, in 10 minutes, we conceded two goals. In that moment, the confidence we lost a bit of confidence. I think we have to work also in this aspects. But we should win, we should win, and we won. For sure.

"We risk in the second half after a red card to stay with 10 men, they tried to push us, and then I decided to change, to make three changes. because I have seen we have lost the balance. And at the end, I think we deserved to win because at the end we created many chances, more chances than Vitesse."

Conte was asked to explain why he accepted the role at Tottenham, after initially walking away from talks with the club last summer and he insisted the potential of the club as much as the players he has taken on was the lure.

"For sure, this club has great potential. I was enthusiastic about the stadium, about the training ground, maybe in the world I don't know if another club has this," he added.

"I think it was one of the reasons, because also I accepted them to come here. Because I know that here, I can work in the way that I like. And the club is a top club. And I want to repay the club about the trust that they showed me.

"If I want to see on the pitch my team, I know I need time, but at the same time, today in a part of the game I have seen what we tried, what we prepared, in these two days. We did good things but at the same time we did things that we can improve a lot."
