Say yes to Taw’s turf love

WHILE TAWAHUB (3.45) proved an ambitious entry in the Nell Gwyn at Newmarket, particularly for her first outing on turf, John Gosden’s runner should feel much more at home in the fillies handicap at Salisbury today.

Unsurprisingly, she failed to land a blow at Newmarket in a race dominated by two of today’s 1,000 Guineas hopefuls Sacred and Saffron Beach.

However, Dane O’Neill’s mount has nothing like that to cope with here, though Samoot looked a promising type, when third on debut to sharp operator Creative Flair at Sandown.

Michael Stoute’s charge obliged at the third time of asking with a narrow victory at Wolverhampton in early April and probably needs to step up on that to match our selection but she is still lightly raced and has scope to progress further.

STATE SECRETARY (1.30) stands out in the novice. Richard Hannon’s gelding looked well above average when second, first time out at Kempton last September to Secret Protector, who has gone on to better things.

His first run this year was at Chelmsford, a few weeks back, where he was sent off the 5/6 jolly but was beaten by a nose by Buxted Too. A perfect chance to make it third-time lucky now, though Roger Varian’s potential improver Hamoudi will keep it interesting.

The incredibly consistent trainer Mark Johnston is again mopping up all over the place and OUT IN YORKSHIRE (1.00), who scored smartly on debut last week at Beverley, can get punters off on a winning note in the opener.

At Hamilton, a winning favourite in the opener, also looks likely as midweek Pontefract scorer SOUL SEEKER (2.10) can follow up straight away.

David O’Meara’s four-year-old escapes a penalty as that was an apprentices race last Wednesday and he can take full advantage.
