Andy Moran is set to become the new Leitrim manager.

The 2017 Footballer of the Year has been linked with a number of vacant inter-county positions in the past few weeks, most recently Longford.

However, the Sunday World understands that Moran is poised now to succeed Terry Hyland in Leitrim, opening the possibility of locking horns with his native Mayo in the Connacht SFC.

Moran – who retired from inter-county football at the end of 2019 – took his first major step into coaching back in January, when he took charge of his native Ballaghaderreen as part of a joint management ticket along with Barry Solan.

They are due to play Balla in the second round of their Mayo SFC Group 3 at 4.0 tomorrow (Saturday).

It is expected now that Moran will be ratified by the Leitrim county board later tomorrow evening.

Hyland stood down as Leitrim manager in mid-July after three years at the helm.

The county board then engaged with a number of stakeholders over the intervening period, including current players, before approaching Moran.

Another Mayo man, John O’Mahony, who hails from Kilmovee five miles from Ballaghaderreen – was Leitrim manager when they won their sole Connacht senior title in 1994.
