The GAA has been made aware of no on-the-field transmission of Covid-19 since the outbreak began.

After weekend reports confirmed that no cases had been traced back to a match or practice in a range of sports including rugby, soccer and American Football, Gaelic games has also been free of ‘competitive’ transmission of Covid.

Like the other sports, any case of the virus linked to it has involved indoor transmission or is associated with pre- or post-event transport.

The GAA’s director of games, club and player welfare Feargal McGill acknowledged it would be difficult to pinpoint an on-the-field source but said the association had not been informed of any to date.

It augurs well for a return to some form of activity when the Government next review the ‘Living with Covid’ plan later this month.

Meanwhile, one of the key members of Mickey Harte’s backroom team for two of Tyrone’s All-Ireland successes has died after a long illness.

Fergal McCann (47) was team trainer when Harte led Tyrone to glory in 2005 and 2008.

He replaced Paddy Tally (current Down manager) who filled the role when Tyrone won their breakthrough All-Ireland in 2003. McCann remained in the position until 2014 when he stepped away.

As well as two All-Ireland successes, he was involved in three Ulster wins in a glorious spell for the county.
