Kellie Harrington’s partner has said that the boxer’s Olympic victory has been “like a dream come true.”

Mandy Loughlin, from Foxrock, said that she never doubted the 31-year-old, who just scooped up a gold medal in women’s lightweight boxing at the Tokyo Games.

Speaking to Ryan Tubridy on his RTÉ radio show, she said: “It’s just been absolutely amazing, like a dream come true, a dream unfolding from day to day. It’s magic.”

Mandy admitted that she didn’t watch any of Kellie’s fights live, adding that she finds it “really tough” and tries to distract herself by taking the couple’s two dogs out for a walk.

“I just can’t do it. I don’t know if it’s whether it’s because I’ve been a boxer myself or anything. I just don’t know. I can’t do it.

“I try to just be normal and do normal things to put it out of the back of my mind for a while.

“But it was actually hard [because] they were all in the middle of the night this time, so it was just sleepless, anxious nights. It was really, really tough.”

She shared that the pandemic resulted in a lack of preparation for Kellie, but she ultimately gained confidence after dominating the Olympic trials.

“I feel like the only thing that wasn’t coming together was a lack of preparation. They weren’t going to the usual competitions at that level.

“But when she went to those qualifiers, she flew through them. She came out with a gold and that was all the confidence she needed to go into things.

“I was just so happy and so positive that she’d get what she deserved.

“She just makes you want to be a better person,” she added.

Mandy and Kellie met 13 years ago at a boxing club in Bray, which Mandy said was “the best thing ever.”

“We just met there and clicked, and the rest is history,” she said.
