THE only couple to have gotten engaged after meeting on the Irish version of First Dates say they're hoping for the first baby as a result of the hit show.

Dundalk man James 'Shez' Sherry reveals that his fiancée Carla Maria was recently pregnant with their first child, but sadly lost the pregnancy.

"We are trying for a kid at the minute, and enjoying it. We were pregnant but it only lasted 13 or 14 weeks, but hopefully some time soon," reveals Shez.

The couple first met on the show in October 2020 and Shez has now moved into Antrim woman Carla's home in Magherafelt, Co Derry.

"This is like winning the Lotto for me. I've found the person I'm going to spend the rest of my life with. To get that off the show is great," he says.

The couple will make a special appearance in a reunion special this Thursday, as Shez admits Carla was initially not the type of woman he told researchers he was seeking.

"I was asked before I was on the show what type of girls I like and I said 'fat white girls' - I like a bit of cushion for the pushin' - and then I got someone pretty much the opposite. Carla is beautiful, mixed race and normal sized," he smiles.

Mental health nurse Carla concedes Shez was not what she was expecting either with his huge number of tattoos.

"I was trying not to make it obvious that I was looking so hard at them. I love tattoos but when he walked in with all these tattoos I nearly dropped dead," she recalls.

The couple tell how they hit it off.

"I fell for him pretty quickly," says Carla. "I always found it easy to talk to him. I can talk, but once he started talking I thought 'oh gosh he can really talk'.

Shez tells a similar tale: "I fell for her personality and she is easy going," he says. "She was able to tell me stuff and I was able to tell her things.

"She is just a great person to be around. She is my best friend. I can't really put it into words."

The couple, who both turned 40 last summer, haven't set a date yet for their wedding.

"I'd like to get married sooner rather than later. If it hadn't been for Covid last year we probably would have been married already," says Carla.

And as well as their friends and family they'd also like a special contingent there - the First Dates staff.

"Mateo, Alice - who was our server the night we met - all the staff involved will be invited to the wedding. At the end of the day if it wasn't for them we wouldn't have got together, so we have to have them there," says Carla.

First Dates is on RTÉ 2 on Thursday at 9.30pm.
