AN actor brandishing a fake gun for a scene in hit crime show Kin has spoken for the first time about how gardai mistook him for a real gunman.

Ben Carolan has been starring as one of Eamon Cunningham's hitmen in the RTÉ series.

Viewers last week saw Ben's character Glen Wright try to take out Michael Kinsella at a restaurant, which was located at Pandini's in Clondalkin, Dublin.

"It was really dark, it was literally the second last shot of the day," recalls Ben (21).

"I was just going in and I was a bit stupid as the gun expert had kept telling me to keep it in my pocket when we're not shooting, so it doesn't get mistaken.

"I was holding it in my hand and couple of garda just got confused and came over."

He was not aware he could have been 'taken out' himself.

"I actually didn't see the gardaí," he says.

"You saw the scene, I had to run into the restaurant.

"As I was running in, apparently, they were running after me. I didn't see it, then when I came out and did the scene a few minutes later people were saying 'did you not see what happened?

"There were a couple of gardaí there, tried to take you down or run at you', but I didn't see anything."

Ben, who has a degree in tourism and international hospitality, auditioned for a number of roles in Kin.

"When I got cast, I was a bit worried how I looked, I don't know if I'm intimidating enough, I don't know if I have that presence as a hitman," he smiles. He said he's now being stopped in the street thanks to his role.

"It's probably the big red head on me," he laughs. "A lot of people stop me and ask for pictures. I do nearly be chasing after them when they don't ask for a picture!"

Ben has delved into lot of activities growing up.

"I tried my hand at everything, boxing, football, GAA, hurling, Irish dancing, singing, everything. I don't know what my Ma was thinking, then, finally, I suppose the drama stuck," he says.

And he was really delighted when he heard that stars such as Aidan Gillen and Ciaran Hinds would be in the series.
