Irish Holby City star Niamh McGrady has said that she is “still processing the shock” after the show was cancelled.

The BBC medical drama, which has been axed after 23 years onscreen, will air its final episodes in March 2022.

Down native Niamh played nurse Mary-Claire Carter in the Casualty spin-off until leaving the show in 2015 and looks back on that period of her life fondly, saying that her Holby City days were some of “the happiest times in her career.”

Taking to Twitter, the 38-year-old expressed her sorrow about the show ending in a series of tweets: “Holby City. I can't believe this news. One of the happiest times in my career. Sending huge love to all the Holby Family past and present.

“I'm still processing the shock.

“Mary Claire started as a semi regular character in 2009. I hadn't a clue what I was doing, I just knew I was in my favourite TV show and that life couldn't possibly get any better than this! #Holby

“In 2013 Mary Claire became a regular character and I got to take her into all sorts of exciting situations and dramas!

“It was such a happy place to work. It was passionately diverse and brought all sorts of amazing characters to the screen.

"I'm so incredibly proud of my time on the show and I send so much love to the current cast and crew. Holby you will never be forgotten.”

The BBC announced the end of Holby City in a statement, adding that it was a “difficult decision to make.”

“We are incredibly proud of Holby City but it’s with great sadness that we are announcing that after 23 years, the show will end on screen in March of next year.

“Holby has been a stalwart with audiences, delighting millions of viewers each week and winning hundreds of awards with a compelling mix of cutting-edge medical stories and explosive personal stories.
