Hughie Maughan has said that he’s still “getting used to” the gay dating scene years after coming out.

The reality star publicly came out as gay during his time on Big Brother in 2016, where he was a runner-up.

After the show, he began dating his Big Brother housemate Ryan Ruckledge. The pair split up last August after spending four years together.

Despite coming out 5 years ago, Hughie has admitted that he is “quite inexperienced” in dating men.

“When I first came out, I was like 21. I was really drunk one night in a pub in Ballyfermot – I mean, very classy – and I just told a few family members,” the 27-year-old explained.

“Then I went into the Big Brother house and got a boyfriend on national television, so the rest of them found out that way.

“I am quite inexperienced even in the gay scene. I was in a relationship for a long time and I never even went to Gay Pride, I never really hung out in gay clubs. It’s still something that I’m only getting used to if I’m completely honest.”

The Dubliner said that his dating life has been “like a trainwreck” in the past and his dates often end in “disaster,” so he’s decided to try a new method of securing a partner.

Hughie will be appearing on Wednesday night’s episode of RTÉ’s Celebrity Pulling with My Parents alongside his dad Hughie Snr and family friend Sabrina, who he trusts in “picking somebody good for” him.

It comes after Hughie Snr admitted that he struggled to come to terms with his son’s sexuality during an episode of Living With Lucy.

“I couldn't accept it in any way,” he said. “I was one of those people who was like, ‘You're straight and nothing else.’

“I was a horrible person. We went through a really hard time. I was shocked because I did not know until Hughie went on Big Brother.

“I was really hurt inside. I went to bed one night with Hughie's boxing gloves crying. Think about how hard it was for Hughie,” he recalled.

Watch Hughie on Celebrity Pulling with My Parents this Wednesday at 9.30pm on RTÉ2.
