Production for the much anticipated Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon, has begun.

However, it is not yet clear if any parts of the latest production will be filmed in Northern Ireland, where Game of Thrones production teams used as their base for eight seasons.

The original Game of Thrones series, which was filmed in the Titanic Quarter in Belfast and at various locations around Ulster, including the scenic Dark Hedges area and the north coast, is the most awarded show in the history of the Emmys.

HBO, the company behind the massive cult hit has confirmed production has begun on House of the Dragon, which tells the story of the Targaryen family, and the lineage of Daenerys Targaryen, played by Emilia Clarke.

Daenerys was also known on GoT as the fan favourite ‘Mother of Dragons’.

She joins an all-star cast of Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Steve Toussaint and Emma D'arcy.

Olivia Cook will play Alicent Hightower, the daughter of Otto Hightower, played by Rhys Ifans.

Paddy Considine will also star in the show as King Viserys Targaryen while Matt Smith will play Prince Daemon Targaryen.

Based on the books of George R.R. Martin, House of the Dragon is set 300 years before the Game of Thrones series.

It is understood the prequel is one of many HBO have in the works, with the company even planning a West End musical based on the show.

While the Game of Thrones series garnered much critical acclaim and a massive following, the finale received mixed reviews, and a petition was even started by fans demanding producers reshot the whole thing.
