NETFLIX has revealed the first images of Gillian Anderson playing the Iron Lady in season 4 of The Crown.

The smash hit drama series tells the inside story of the decades-long reign of Queen Elizabeth II and the struggle between her private and public self.

The Crown's fourth season stars Helena Bonham Carter as Princess Margaret, Tobias Menzies as The Duke of Edinburgh, Erin Doherty as Princess Anne, Emerald Fennell as Camilla Parker Bowles and Marion Bailey as the Queen Mother.

However, it is the former X Files actor’s appearance as Margaret Thatcher that has been causing a stir.

The official Twitter account for Netflix, this morning released four stills from the upcoming series including the first look at Lady Thatcher entering Number Ten Downing Street.

Wearing her trademark knee length blue coat and heavily coifed hairdo, the Prime Minister waves at reporters as she stands defiantly alongside her husband Dennis.

Irish fans of the show will be only too familiar of the role Thatcher played with the troubles in the North.

It is understood that several references will be made to the Troubles throughout season four.

However the main storyline will focus on Britain’s first female Prime Minister taking a hard nosed line with the Queen.

In particular the fact that Thatcher, who would constantly use the Royal “we”, did it deliberately to annoy Queen Elizabeth.

The Iron Lady was known to use the Royal “we” when talking about herself, which annoyed the heck out of Elizabeth.

Irish royal fans will also get an intimate look at the early days of romance between Prince Charles and Dianna Spencer including a mammoth recreation of their wedding day.

The Crown will be available on Netflix from 15th November
