Netflix have given fans a first look at Dominic West as Prince Charles and Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana in The Crown.

The fifth season of the hit drama began filming last month and features Debicki as the princess and West as her husband, the Prince of Wales, through the early 1990s.

Debicki will take over from Emma Corrin as the Princess of Wales, who played a young Diana in season 4, where she met heir to the throne Prince Charles (Josh O’Connor).

The new images show West (51) in a double-breasted suit looking pensive in an outdoor shot while Debicki (30) reclines on a sofa while reading letters as Diana.

West will be taking on the role of Prince Charles at the time of his affair with his second wife, Camilla Parker-Bowles.

It was first rumoured back in October that West would portray Charles in the Netflix series, but the studio had not confirm the news until now.

He recently appeared alongside Lily James in miniseries The Pursuit of Love and is currently in the middle of filming Downton Abbey 2.

Meanwhile, it was announced last year that Debicki would play Princess Diana in the show’s fifth and sixth seasons, which will cover Diana’s tragic death in 1997.

The Australian actor’s credits include Christopher Nolan’s Tenet, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and the 2013 remake of The Great Gatsby.

Speaking of her new role at the time, she said: “Princess Diana's spirit, her words and her actions live in the hearts of so many. It is my privilege and honour to be joining this masterful series, which has had me absolutely hooked from episode one.”

West and Debicki will be joined in season 5 by Harry Potter actor Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth II, Jonathan Pryce (The Two Popes) as Prince Philip, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil’s Lesley Manville as Princess Margaret and Jonny Lee Miller (Elementary) as John Major.
