After 14 years of failed relationships, 29-year-old Margaret decided to change her approach for RTE's hit series First Dates.

For the first time in her life the Dubliner decided she wanted to date a man, and do it on national television.

The stunning supermarket manager from Crumlin ticked the 'man' box on the application form but insisted that it "had to be a man in uniform and preferably not from Dublin."

So the producers lined up her first ever heterosexual date with 33-year-old firefighter Shane.

"I have only dated girls since I was 15," she tells the shocked Fermanagh man during their meal on the reality TV show.

"I've kissed boys but never slept with one. I look at them and think they are good looking but never had that sexual attraction.

"But the last year and half I've been looking at guys and wondering what it would be like to sleep with them.

"I made a switch and completely cut girls off the radar because it wasn't working."

Trying to reason with her logic, she exclaims: "I feel like guys want two things. One of them is food; and the other one isn't," she laughs.

So what is she looking for in her first ever man? "Well, I want tall, dark and handsome. But realistically, I just want to find a best friend that I fancy the pants off.

"I'm easy to get on with, so I've no doubt I'll get on with whoever is on the date. Whether the spark is there I'm looking for.

"I'm looking for a man in uniform," she reveals. "A paramedic, firefighter. I have a weak spot for a Guard, army, fireman but I think I would prefer a country guy to a Dublin guy, to be fair."

Her confidence on the show has not always been there. As the pair get closer and chat more she reveals: "I was 16 stone and had an early mid-life crisis. I shaved off half my hair and dyed it black.

"I was always big growing up. Looking back now I was an eight-year-old girl in small women's clothing. It's not good, and it didn't do anything for my confidence."

She continues: "It was really tough losing the weight but it was enjoyable seeing my body change into this completely different person. It's surreal looking back."

Later on in the chat Margaret divulges that she flew to Lithuania to get a tummy tuck and a boob job. "I originally didn't want my boobs done but my mam and I agreed that at 25 years of age and after I lost lots of weight they didn't look right. I shouldn't be so self-conscious."

Luckily for Margaret, Shane seems smitten by her straight away and even tries to convince himself of their compatibility, stating: "I do fancy her. Plus, she has the same birthday as my mother. She'll be delighted; like it's written in the stars," he laughs.

Also in next Thursday's show viewers will see psychic medium Brenda (73) from Dublin put her cards on the table with company director Gerry (71) from Mayo.

Dublin soldier Aran (23) tries his luck with Kirsty (20) from Dungarvan and 27-year-old gymnast Luke (27) from Foxrock goes on a date with bubbly flight attendant Miriam (24), who is originally from Seville.

First Dates is on RTE2 this Thursday at 9.30pm.
