Emer O’Neill has said that working on The Today Show was a “very special experience” as she wrapped up her final episode on Tuesday.

The presenter took over hosting duties with Dáithí Ó Sé and Maura Derrane on the RTÉ show and had been filling in for Sinead Kennedy in recent weeks.

Kennedy is currently on maternity leave and confirmed last month that she would return to our screens in March.

After hosting 27 live shows, Emer marked the end of her Today Show journey with a sweet post on Instagram, where she thanked her co-workers and viewers making her time on the show so special.

“Officially my last day on the Today show,” she wrote.

“I can’t thank everyone enough for the messages of support throughout my time on the show and the love I have received.

“Thank you @rtetoday and @rteone for taking a chance on me xxx 27 live shows under my belt. I still can’t truly believe it!

“If you want to see me break down on live TV feel free to check out the show today on the player.

“Such an amazing bunch of people to have been surrounded by the last few months. And don’t get me started on the viewers.”

Emer’s final show fell on her 36th birthday and she was presented with a delicious chocolate cake on air.

“Thank you all for a very special experience and my beautiful and thoughtful birthday surprise.”

Sharing a photo of her cake and some flowers, the birthday girl thanked RTÉ for welcoming her into the Today Show family.

“Thank you to all of the staff of @rtetoday. You guys took me under your wing and made me part of the family. I thank you all so much for that. Will miss you all so much.”
