Derry Girls will begin filming its third season this month, a cast member has confirmed.

The second series aired its final episode back in April 2019, and Channel 4 immediately confirmed that the show would be returning for a third time.

Production on Season 3 was postponed in spring 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic but fans of the hit sitcom will be pleased to hear that Derry Girls will begin filming at the end of September.

Members of the cast and crew have been spotted in Derry ahead of filming and now Ian McElhinney, who is best known as Granda Joe on the show, has confirmed that production will resume in the coming weeks.

Speaking to The Belfast Telegraph, Ian said that the crew are hoping to have the series wrapped up by the end of the year and are aiming to have it on our screens by spring 2022.

The veteran Belfast actor said: “We should have started shooting in May of last year and then we went round the houses with Covid-19 so it was deferred.

“There was talk about trying to shoot it at the beginning of this year but there just wasn’t a big enough window for that to happen.

“So they decided to push it back and now at the end of September we’ll get into it again three years since season two which is hard to believe.”

“The girls are now old enough to be their grannies so I don’t know where we’re going with that,” he joked.

Ian continued: “I’m delighted that it’s coming back... It’ll be great and we’ll be delighted to see it back because it’s still in people’s hearts a little bit which is nice.

“I haven’t seen the script yet so I don’t know a great deal about it but I’m informed it’s great and I’m sure it is.

“I have no doubt we’ll have some nice material to work on and that people will continue to enjoy it.”
