Irish actor Colm Meaney is set to star in the 15th season of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

The show follows a gang of friends, known as The Gang, who own Paddy’s Pub, an Irish bar in the Pennsylvanian capital of Philadelphia.

In the trailer for the new season, Colm strikes up a friendship with Charlie Day’s character, also called Charlie. The pair head to a cheese shop before they visit a graveyard to see the burial place of a man named Michael Kelly. Colm’s character says of Michael “[he] died eating rocks which he thought were eggs.”

“This dude is like the Irish version of me,” Charlie tells Rob McElhenney’s character Mac. “We’re into a lot of the same stuff; ghouls, and cheese, and… ghouls.”

In this season of the show, The Gang visit Ireland on holidays, Mac reveals he wants to become a catholic priest, Frank admits he visited Epstein’s Island “for the snorkling”, and Dee starts giving acting classes.

An official synopsis of the season reads: “This is a season that sees The Gang try to exploit pandemic aid, sidestep cancel culture, evade criminal justice, reflect on their origins, and reconcile their identities and homeland roots."

A promotional poster for the season shows a cartoon version of The Gang wearing head to toe green, with matching ginger locks.

The cast visited the Emerald Isle in August while filming, and while here they were on the hunt for a Danny Devito look alike.

"Urgent – Danny DeVito double needed for It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia',” the job posting by Movie Extras read.

"Yes, 'It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia' are coming to Ireland! We need a Danny DeVito double. Shooting is this Sunday 29th August and the location is Dublin. Height: 4ft5, Large, Waist pant 41."

It is not known what exactly the body-double was needed for, but one Dublin man put himself forward for the job.

The man, who looks alot like the American star shared an image of the advert to his instagram account and captioned it: “I’ve cleared my schedule” tagging Movie Extras in the post.

It is not clear just yet if he bagged the job.

While filming, Rob McElhinney, who is also the show’s creator shared a picture of the cast in character standing on a foggy cliff. He simply captioned the image with a four-leaf clover emoji.

It is not the first time the 44-year-old has visited Ireland. In August 2019 he took a family holiday here and shared images from Sligo, Malahide and Trim.

Back in 2015 he visited Belfast with his co-star Charlie Day, who posed for pictures with star-struck fans.

The show which first premiered in 2005 is set to run for a further four seasons, making it the longest-running live-action comedy series ever made.

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia has a long legacy of nihilistic humour with the characters often engaging in anti-social behaviour such as huffing glue, seducing each other's love interests, crawling naked through sewers to search for valuables, and being narcissistic.

Season 15 premieres in the United States on December 1st, however it is unknown when it will be available in Ireland. Season 1 to 14 of the show is currently available to watch on Netflix.
