Cervical cancer campaigner and patient advocate Vicky Phelan said she has been “absolutely blown away” by the reaction to her interview with Ryan Tubridy on The Late Late Show.

Ms Phelan, a Kilkenny native who lives in Annacotty, Co Limerick appeared on the show on Friday night explaining why she stopped her chemotherapy after battling the disease for four years and her hopes of spending her final Christmas with her two children.

She recently received treatment in the US, her fourth series of treatment since her first diagnosis, but it had to be stopped following the growth of new tumours. She had begun a trial centred around proton therapy.

Taking to her Instagram page Ms Phelan revealed how much the night meant to her and how important the public’s messages are to her.

She said: “I have been absolutely blown away by the reaction to my interview on The Late Late Show on Friday night. I was exhausted after a long day and a very late night.”

The mum-of-two explained she had a very early start the next morning as her son Darragh had a soccer match.

“I had to be up early on Saturday to go watch my son play a soccer match . It was worth the early start. Darragh scored two goals and his team Ailing Gann AFC won their match. Yay! I was fit for absolutely nothing yesterday except the couch.”

Ms Phelan who lifted the lid on the cervical cancer diagnosis and treatment debacle in 2018 thanked several people for their help on the run-up to the show including Lisa Poole for helping her with her makeup, fashion designers Sonya Lennon and Brenda Courtney for her outfit and her friend who accompanied her on her journey from and to Limerick to Dublin.

She added: “To Steve Wall and Joe Wall of The Stunning band, one of my favourite bands ever, for kindly offering to come into studio to play a song for me. Thank you lads.”

Ms Phelan also thanked host Ryan Tubridy and those working behind the scenes.

“To Ryan for such a sensitive interview on Friday night and for all your support over the past 12 months in particular with messages of support while I was away in the States - thank you.

"To all the team behind the scenes especially Ian and Yvonne, for looking after me so well Friday night and for sending me home with flowers, chocolates and the coveted Late Late Toy Show pyjamas for my kids - thank you.

“And last but not least to the people of Ireland who have supported me and continue to support me, I can never thank you enough. Thank you, thank you, thank you”.

Speaking on his RTÉ Radio One morning show Ryan explained that everywhere he went over the weekend he was stopped by the public who expressed their “love, respect and admiration” for Ms Phelan.

“So much for admiration for her. It was quite a show. It was a very emotional show. It was very, very moving to talk to Vicky. Vicky is great fun off air as well. She is easy to laugh with.

“Look, hopefully she is going to have a lovely run in to Christmas with her family now. Her son Darragh won his match on Saturday and she was up at the crack of dawn for that as well.

“She’s happy and she’s lots of plans for the next week or two. Lots of love, respect and admiration for Vicky and rightly so."
