Brendan O’Carroll’s reference to Tyler Perry’s “colour” while appearing on The One Show has sparked controversy online.

The Mrs Brown’s Boys star raised eyebrows when he made the remark during an interview while promoting A Madea Homecoming, the latest Netflix film from Perry.

The Irish actor has a guest role in the movie that features Perry, like O’Carroll as Mrs Brown, playing an older woman

Presenter Lauren Laverne asked O’Carroll if he would return the favour and give Perry a cameo on Mrs Brown’s Boys.

“I don’t know if we could afford him, he’s very expensive,” O’Carroll said, with Perry saying: “Please answer that, I want to hear that.

“He’s very expensive and so far we haven’t had anybody his colour in there,” the Dublin actor continued, pointing at his face on the word “colour”.

O’Carroll said that he would love the actor to appear on the show or for the pair to make another film together, while Perry laughed at the comment while repeating the words: “Nobody my colour.”

“Times have changed, change the world,” Perry added, as O’Carroll continued pointing at his face and mouthing. “Diversity rules, here we go."

People took to social media to complain about his remarks, with one saying: "Brendan Carol just made a racist remark on the one show and not one person called him out. Shame on you BBC #TheOneShow."

Another added: "Did Brendan O’Carroll just say Tyler a Perry couldn’t be in Mrs Brown’s Boys because he’s black on The One Show!?"

A third wrote: "Brendan O'Carroll's attempt at being funny towards@tylerperry on BBC One Show tonight was quite embarrassing, I'm sure no malice was meant but that comment was wrong on so many levels.

The film focuses on the chaos that goes down at Madea’s great-grandson’s college graduation celebration.

The actor has played Madea in 11 different films and plays as well as featuring the character in multiple TV appearances over the years.

A trailer for the new film shows Brendan in character arriving to Tyler’s character ‘s home and saying ‘Wakanda forever’ as the door opens.

As the rest of the trailer plays out, Mrs Brown and on-screen daughter Cathy make several appearances, which hints they’ll be quite integral to the film.
