Australia Day has arrived and Aussies all over the globe are celebrating the best of Down Under today, from stunning beaches to Vegemite.

The country has also produced its fair share of famous faces, and they all got their start from the same place: Home and Away.

Many have come and gone from Summer Bay over the years, but these are some of the ones who made it to Hollywood.

Hollywood star Hemsworth is best known for playing the hammer-wielding superhero Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise, but the Melbourne native first got his start in Summer Bay.

He starred as student Kim Hyde on Home and Away from 2004 until 2007, stealing the hearts of soap lovers everywhere when he got caught up in a paternity mix-up with his ex-girlfriend Brooke McPherson.

Kim later married doctor Rachel Armstrong but left his wife and Summer Bay for good to be with another woman, Kit Hunter, after she fell pregnant with his child.

A decade before landing her breakthrough role as Betty Elms in Mulholland Drive, Naomi Watts was portraying Julie Gibson on Home and Away.

Super fans of the show will remember that Julie, who appeared in a few episodes between April and May 1991, used a wheelchair after surviving a car accident that killed her mother.

Watts has since gone on to earn two Oscar nominations and won a Screen Actors Guild award for starring in Birdman.

Before becoming a household name for his Oscar-winning role as the Joker in The Dark Knight and appearing in hits such as 10 Things I Hate About You and Brokeback Mountain, Heath Ledger had a stint on Home and Away as Scott Irwin.

Despite only appearing in a handful of episodes, the actor is fondly remembered for starring as the local bad boy, who got expelled from school for breaking into the principal’s office and stealing exam papers.

Ledger died on January 22nd 2008 after accidentally overdosing on a combination of drugs.

Arrested Development actor Isla Fisher joined the cast of Home and Away in 1994 when she was just 19 years old.

The 45-year-old starred as Shannon Reed in almost 400 episodes over three years.

Her character arrived at the Bay with her brother Curtis and caused chaos when it was revealed that they were actually dating and only adopted siblings.

Fisher left the show in 1997 to move to Paris, where she attended a theatre and arts training school, and has since appeared in films such as The Great Gatsby, Confessions of a Shopaholic, and Now You See Me.

Adelaide native Samara acted as gym owner Indi Walker on Home and Away from 2009 to 2013, leaving the Bay soon after she found out that her husband Romeo died of cancer.

The 29-year-old has been busy ever since, making a name for herself by securing deals with Netflix and Amazon Prime.

Some of her recent roles include Bee in Netflix’s The Babysitter film series, Claire Wood in miniseries Hollywood, and Jessica Chandler in Nine Perfect Strangers.
