Actress Angeline Ball has revealed that she got advice from a retired Criminal Assets Bureau (CAB) personnel ahead of her role in Hidden Assets.

The 52-year-old plays Emer, a CAB officer in the new RTE drama about organised crime.

Ball revealed that speaking to a former CAB agent was eye-opening for her.

Chatting to RTE she said: “I did speak to an actual female in CAB. What you’re seeing on the screen is - with the slightest poetic licence - authentic.

“And when I spoke to her, it was eye-opening. The fact that they carry guns all the time. You could be shadowing someone in a supermarket in Ireland, and there’s a gun under your armpit, that’s the really scary bit.”

Chatting about her character, the Commitments star said she it is an “interesting” role to play.

“You’ve got Emer, who has left the police, and now works for CAB. That’s what makes it so interesting as well. It’s not just playing a cop. God knows what she can find while working for the Criminal Assets Bureau. You’d maybe get a call to fly to London or America.”

As the story begins, Emer thinks she is on a routine drug bust, but instead finds a bag of diamonds.

“It takes her down this road where it’s becoming something really, really big. You’re talking about the possibility of a terrorist attack, from something that involves a local drug dealer, then heads over to Belgium and Antwerp,” she explained.

“But there’s no flicker - she never lets on that’s she’s out of her depth. She must feel very out of her depth, coming from where they’d set this office up in the west of Ireland.”

Angeline said that she really enjoyed working on the show and thinks of her character of an “Irish female Columbo,” and describes her on-screen work partner, Belgian cop Christian DeJong as a “seventies cop” as he grew out a moustache for the show.

DeJong, played by Wouter Hendrickx, works with Emer to bring down the criminals.

“Her senses take her to this apartment,” Angeline said of Emer.

“I don’t want to give away too much of the plot but she meets up with this Belgian policeman. He’s kind of trying to diss her job a little bit, and she tells him ‘No, I’m a Detective Sergeant and this is what I do for a living’.

“They’re similar characters in terms of wanting to get to the truth… and they’re not afraid to get their hands dirty.”

Angeline Ball recently starred in Irish movie Deadly Cuts alongside Erika Roe and Lauren Larkin. The film is a black comedy set in a working-class hair salon in Dublin. The stylists become vigilantes and community heroes when they take on gang members who are threatening their community.

Hidden Assets starts this Sunday on RTE One at 9.35pm.
