The TV host married Stephanie Lowe in March 1993, with the couple going on to have two daughters, Molly and Ruby.
However, he shocked the showbiz world earlier this year when he opened up about his sexuality.
And he told host Ryan Tubridy how his wife was the first to know when he realised he wanted out of their 27 year-marriage.
“When I knew, Steph knew; I wouldn't have got married if I had of known,” he said.
“It was absolutely not a factor; it was not in my head.
"We had a wonderful marriage, have a wonderful marriage, Steph and I, we are still holding on as much as we can."
Philip also revealed how he drove 300 miles to Cornwall to tell his mother, who is in her eighties, before he told the nation.
She said that she gave him her blessing, having just received some good news about an eye condition.
“She had already asked me months before, 'are you OK, you look skinny...you look sad, I know there's something wrong'.
"I said 'Mum, I have something to tell you', and I told her and she said 'Oh, oh right OK, thank God for that, I thought you were going blind...those things in your eyes, that's alright.
“So long as you are OK and Steph's OK and the girls are OK'.
“My mum suddenly turned into this incredibly modern, forward-thinking 84-year-old and we have these incredible really good solid chats...that's actually worked out really well."
Schofield has been co-presenter of This Morning since 2002, with Holly Willoughby joining him in September 2009.
The pair have always been great mates, but Phillip was forced to dismiss claims of a feud between the dynamic duo last year.
Their relationship was rumoured to have become strained in 2019 amid accusations a series of presenters were unhappy with his attitude.
But he told Tubridy how supportive his co-presenter and friend Holly Willoughby was when he decided to go on This Morning and tell the news live on air in February of this year.
He also told how his weight plummeted to well under nine stone as he grappled with the idea of coming out.
"I remember so vividly that moment where I had written that statement and my thumb was hesitating over the phone and I thought 'This is when I nuke my life and those around me,'" he said.
