Top country star Cliona Hagan reveals that she made her fiancé Simon Sheerin "jump through a few hoops" before finally agreeing to go out with him.

In an exclusive interview on the new Sunday World country music podcast, My Country Life, Cliona recalls how the couple worked together for a year before striking up a relationship.

However, the young Tyrone woman says she was attracted to the Westmeath musician from the start, after first meeting in 2016 through the business. "I just knew him (then) to say, 'Hi...bye!'"

Was he cute? "Yeah, but I would never tell him that. I wouldn't want to give him a big head," she laughs.

"Yeah, I absolutely did always notice him, but I only knew him to say 'hello' at those events. Then we became friends."

The My Country Life podcast is available now on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and Amazon.

Simon joined her band after Cliona appeared on Dancing With The Stars in 2019. "We got to play for a year before everything happened," Cliona says on the podcast, explaining that by then she had got to know Simon "as a person, and what a very kind soul he is".

Simon eventually asked Cliona out. "I didn't say 'yes' straight away, truth be told," she laughs. "I made him jump through a few hoops first. He eventually got me to say yes."

Cliona also tells how the couple grew closer during lockdown and grew a new fanbase performing together on Facebook Live. "You get to know somebody so much more spending so much more time with him," she says.

"Doing Facebook Live was a fantastic outlet for us. So many people tuning in overseas were saying, 'This is the highlight of our week.'"

On the podcast, Cliona also relives the moment Simon sprung a surprise proposal at Christmas 2021. "I couldn't have asked for a better proposal," she says. "He definitely did well."
