Rising star Netflix release creepy trailer for Paul Mescal's big screen debut The Lost Daughter

The psychological drama also features Olivia Colman, Dakota Johnson, Peter Sarsgaard and Jessie Buckley

Netflix have released the trailer for the new movie, The Lost Daughter, in which Paul Mescal makes his feature film debut.

The psychological drama that also features Olivia Colman, Dakota Johnson, Peter Sarsgaard and Jessie Buckley, follows a college professor on a seaside holiday who becomes obsessed with a young mother and daughter she meets.

“Alone on a seaside vacation, Leda (Olivia Colman) becomes consumed with a young mother (Dakota Johnson) and daughter as she watches them on the beach" the synopsis reads.

"Unnerved by their compelling relationship (and their raucous and menacing extended family), Leda is overwhelmed by her own memories of the terror, confusion, and intensity of early motherhood.

“An impulsive act shocks Leda into the strange and ominous world of her own mind, where she is forced to face the unconventional choices she made as a young mother and their consequences" it adds.

The flick is already receiving rave reviews, and was awarded best screenplay for Maggie Gyllenhaal at its premiere in Venice early this year.

The other Irish star, Jessie Buckley, plays a younger Leda in the flashbacks while Paul Mescal plays a hotel worker Will who befriends Leda. Peter Saarsgard (who is married to Gyleenhaal), Ed Harris, DDagmara Dominczyk and Oliver Jackson-Cohen also star.

The Lost Daughter is due to be released in cinemas on December 17, 2021 and will land on the streaming site on New Year’s Eve.
