It's time for Jennifer Lawrence to move over and Robert Downey Jr to take a bow- a bunch of emerging talents are about to hit the big time and become Hollywood's new power players.

With two years of blockbusters on the way and the streamers making bigger shows than ever, several actors are about to torpedo their way to the top of Tinseltown's A-list.

Excitingly, they include a number of Irish actors, including Jessie Buckley, who has several big projects coming up, Aisling Franciosi, to star with Sandra Bullock in a major new film for Netflix, and some young actor by the name of Paul Mescal.

Mescal, along with his co-star Daisy Edgar-Jones, has become an international sensation following the huge success of Normal People. While Mescal definitely had a different 2020 to the rest of us - becoming a major star and featuring in Rolling Stones videos - the Maynooth man is set to have an even more successful 2021.

He recently finished filming Maggie Gyllenhaal's directorial debut The Lost Daughter with Olivia Colman in Greece. The drama tells of a woman forced to confront her dark past while on a vacation.

And he just started filming Carmen, a modern-day take on one of the world's most epic operas, on location in Australia. The actor has already shown us in Normal People that he's well able to hold a tune.

"It has been career-changing and life-changing," he recently said of the role. "This is my first time in Australia, and I'm here with work, and it's all because of Normal People. I'm incredibly grateful for it but, yeah - it has been crazy."

His co-star on the show, Daisy Edgar- Jones, is also set for a big year thanks to her growing profile in the US with two new movies on the way. She'll play a women suspected of the murder of her ex-boyfriend in Deep South drama Where the Crawdads Sing. Then she'll star in Fresh, described as a thriller about a fear women face every day.

Others zooming up the A-list include Vanessa Kirby, likely to get an Oscar nomination for her latest movie.

The Londoner would be better known in theatre circles and to fans of The Crown, where she played Princess Margaret. But her role in new Netflix film Pieces of a Woman has sent her career soaring.

She's been getting raves and is likely to have a major run this awards season for playing a woman whose life unravels following a home birth that ends in tragedy.

The opening scene, all 30 minutes of it, will stay in your memory for some time. "The best moments of my working life was doing that birth," said Kirby of the role. "It's hard to articulate. I'm unbelievably grateful and touched that it's for this film. It's my first lead role too and I knew I that was ready." Several other movies are already on the way.

As well as Paul Mescal, two other Irish actors are being tipped by Hollywood pundits to have a stellar year. To Irish fans, Killarney actress Jessie Buckley is already well known thanks to her strong run on BBC reality TV show I'd Do Anything, TV series Chernobyl and indie drama Wild Rose.

But this is the year that Buckley will conquer the US, following her terrific performance in Netflix movie I'm Thinking Of Ending Things, featured in many critics' end-of-year highlights.

The roles have been flying in since, and just this week it was revealed that she's in talks to play the lead in the new movie from Alex Garland (Ex-Machina).

The thriller, called Men, centres on a young woman following the death of her husband. US pundits say Buckley landed the role that was sought after by a number of well-known stars.

Buckley will also play Juliet in a new take on Romeo and Juliet and is also starring in Maggie Gyllenhaal's film The Lost Daughter. It's been a dream come true, she told me recently. "When I was young, I didn't even think it would be an inch of a possibility that I would end up doing a film. That just existed in another land for me. Movie stars were in movies, not the one at the bottom of the road."

Also well known in Ireland thanks to her role in serial killer thriller The Fall, this is the year that Irish/Italian actress Aisling Franciosi will make an impact in the US.

Fresh from her role in TV series The Black Narcissus, which caused a stir with viewers over Christmas, Aisling will next be seen with A-lister Sandra Bullock in her latest project for Netflix.

The untitled movie is part of a major production deal Bullock has with Netflix - their last collaboration, Bird Box, was a huge ratings hit for the streamer.

"I just finished on that project," she told the Sunday World recently. "I think she's incredible. She's also smart and really nice. I don't think I've wrapped my head around it yet. It has got thriller elements to it and a lot of drama."
