A film about Cervical Check campaigner Vicky Phelan has been nominated for a human rights award.

The documentary film titled Vicky, is described as “an exclusive and intimate journey into not only her fight to expose the truth of what happened for all women, but also her own personal fight to stay alive.”

A synopsis for the film reads; “In 2018, on the steps of The High Court, Vicky Phelan gave a now-infamous address where she exposed one of the worst women’s health scandals in Irish history: the cervical cancer debacle.”

The film is set to premiere at Dublin International Film Festival on February 24th at the Light House Cinema.

The 90 minute film was directed by Sasha King and produced by Sasha King and Bill Snodgrass.

The film is one of five films announced by the The Irish Council for Civil Liberties (ICCL) in the running for the 2022 Human Rights on Film Award.

Other films nominated include Young Plato directed by Declan McGrath and Neasa Ní Chianáin, and Happening directed by Audrey Diwan.

Where Is Anne Frank directed by Ari Folman and Hive directed by Blerta Basholli are also nominated for the award.

The winning film will be decided by a panel of six judges chaired by disability and LGBTQ+ rights activist Suzy Byrne.

Citizenship rights activist Emma de Souza, former journalist Vincent Browne, founder and managing director of First Music Contact Angela Doran, and filmmakers Paul Rice and Liam Montgomery are also on the panel.

The Virgin Media Dublin Film Festival runs February 23rd until March 6th.
