Kerry Katona has claimed that ex-husband Brian McFadden tried to stop her from doing I’m a Celebrity in 2004.

He only relented when manager Louis Walsh intervened - and Kerry was astonished when Brian later flew to Australia to celebrate her winning the show. She was able to relaunch her career on the back of the success.

“I fell pregnant with Molly when I met Brian and Brian was a very typical Irish Catholic man - wants a mother at home - and so I quit Atomic Kitten because all I wanted to be was a mum, really,” she told TV star Marnie Simpson on her podcast, Marnie’s Home Truths.

“I wanted to be a mum and a wife and create that family environment so I gave that all up.”

Kerry, who had a tough upbringing, taught herself to fully read and write when she moved to Ireland and Brian was on tour. But over time, she said, her ambitions increased.

“I got a bit bored and I got offered to do Loose Women, so I was one of the original Loose Women as well, and then I got offered the jungle and Brian said ‘no’. He said - God rest her soul - he went: ‘You’ll be the Jade Goody of the jungle - you’re not doing it.’

“And it was Louis Walsh who turned round and said, ‘You’ve got to let her do this because she needs to go to work’. Louis encouraged me to do it and I ended up winning.”

She was surprised, she said, when Brian showed up to congratulate her as she was crowned the winner - she had been expecting her late aunt, Angela, to be there.

“And when he turned up to surprise me I was like, ‘What? Where’s our Angela?’ That was in the February - and he left me in the September.”

She and her ex-husband get along well now, she said - but added: “It took us a long time to get there”.
