Starstruck Jessie Buckley, Aisling Franciosi and Niamh Algar among stars shortlisted for IFTA Awards

The late Nika McGuigan - daughter of boxing legend Barry - who starred in Wildfire before tragically dying of cancer in 2019, has been nominated for her work in that film.

Jessie Buckley, Aisling Franciosi, Niamh Algar and Brendan Gleeson are among the stars shortlisted for this year’s IFTA Awards.

The late Nika McGuigan - daughter of boxing legend Barry - who starred in Wildfire before tragically dying of cancer in 2019, has been nominated for her work in that film.

The emotional drama about two sisters who make a discovery about their past is due for release later this year. Nika had been forging a successful acting career before being diagnosed with the disease.

Normal People, Line of Duty and RTE drama series Smother are among the high-profile nominees for the IFTA Film and Drama Awards, which will take place virtually on July 4th.

Normal People tops the nominees list with 15 nods across all the major categories.

In the film categories, coming-of-age comedy/drama Dating Amber tops the nominees with eight shortlists, closely followed by forthcoming drama Herself.

The movie, about a mother who builds a home for her family in a bid to escape an abusive relationship, has been widely praised by reviewers in advance of its Irish release.

In the coveted best film category, gritty crime thriller Broken Law, Dating Amber, Herself, the Jesse Eisenberg-starring sci-fi thriller Vivarium and Wildfire will all compete for the top prize. Wolfwalkers, the Oscar-nominated animated movie from Kilkenny-based studios Cartoon Saloon, has also been nominated for best film.

In TV drama, twisty thriller Blood, Victorian drama Dead Still, acclaimed thriller Line of Duty, family whodunnit Smother and Normal People will compete in what is an extremely strong field this year.

In the film acting categories the female nominees include Clare Dunne for Herself which she co-wrote and stars in, Jessie Buckley in Charlie Kaufman’s Netflix movie I’m Thinking of Ending Things, Lola Petticrew for playing the title character in Dating Amber, and both Nora-Jane Noone and the late Nika McGuigan for their performances in Wildfire.

For best actor (film) actor Ciarán Hinds has been shortlisted for The Man in the Hat, Fionn O’Shea for Dating Amber (he is also nominated for his supporting role in Normal People for his role as one of the great Irish villains) and Gabriel Byrne for Death of a Ladies Man.

Moe Dunford’s performance as a rogue cage fighter in Knuckledust sees him nominated, while Tristan Heanue’s lead performance as a guard torn between duty and family in Broken Law earns him an IFTA nomination.

In the lead actress drama category, winner Aisling Franciosi is nominated for her role in the recent update of Black Narcissus, along with Catherine Walker for Derry Girl creator Lisa McGee’s The

Deceived. Dervla Kirwin has been nominated for well-received drama series Smother, along with Eve Hewson for Netflix’s Behind Her Eyes, and last year’s double IFTA-winning Niamh Algar for her role in Ridley Scott’s sci-fi hit Raised by Wolves.

In lead actor: drama, Adrian Dunbar sees his celebrated turn in Line of Duty earn him another nomination, along with Brendan Gleeson for playing Donald Trump in The Comey Rule. James Nesbitt (Bloodlands) and Michael Smiley (Dead Still) are also nominated, as is Paul Mescal for his widely praised performance in Normal People.

“This year’s nominations are an incredible reflection of the high-calibre talent of Irish filmmakers, who are producing world-class standards of production and storytelling on screen,” said IFTA Chief Executive, Áine Moriarty. “The Irish Academy is proud to showcase and acknowledge their great achievements.”
