The Cure’s Robert Smith says seeing Thin Lizzy perform live 'was better than drinking'

Robert Smith and Phil Lynott
The Cure’s frontman Robert Smith has shared praise for Thin Lizzy.
The 62-year-old goth rocker paid a huge compliment to the Dublin band during an unearthed 2004 interview with Rolling Stone.
Discussing the band fronted by Phil Lynott, Smith said they were one of the first bands that he saw in concert.
“Thin Lizzy, they were fabulous. I saw them probably ten times in two years. The actual sound of them live was just so overpowering, it was better than drinking.”

He caught the band as they played a major concert in the early 1970s alongside The Rolling Stones and Irish guitar hero Rory Gallagher.
“I wasn’t really a big Rory Gallagher fan, but I thought his guitar playing was fabulous.”
In other interviews, Smith has branded Lynott as a “genius” and revealed he has every Thin Lizzy album on vinyl.
Thin Lizzy formed in Dublin in 1969 and was fronted by Phil Lynott until the band split in 1983.
Smith also cites The Beatles and Pink Floyd amongst his influences.
The godfather of Goth formed The Cure in the early 1970s, and has remained the only consistent member of the group since.
Famous for their hits Friday I’m In Love, Just Like Heaven and Boys Don’t Cry, The Cure celebrated their 40th anniversary with a concert at Malahide Castle in June 2019.
