The Den - one of Ireland’s most popular Irish children’s shows of all time - is back for Christmas!

However, the hit show, featuring Ray D’Arcy, Zig & Zag and Dustin the Turkey, hasn’t got a TV screening this season.

Instead, the popular characters will be saving Christmas once again on their hilarious new one-off podcast.

The Den Christmas Podcast is now available to listen to wherever you get your podcasts – and it’s guaranteed to bring you some festive cheer.

After over a decade off the air, Ray, Zig, Zag and Dustin teamed up again last year for a one-off special for RTÉ Does Comic Relief.

It was also a huge hit with viewers when it returned during the second lockdown for six shows at the end of last year.

RTE were then expected to bring back The Den this year – but ultimate decided against it.

“When RTE announced that The Den wasn’t going to go ahead this year the reaction was huge, with over 1.3 million impressions on social media,” Ray D’Arcy tells Sundayworld.com.

“There’s obviously a big demand out there and there’s a lot of fans, and Christmas time is a special time when it comes to The Den - not just because Dustin is a turkey, but because we saved Christmas on so many occasions.”

All the mayhem and shenanigans in The Den Christmas Podcast took in Ray’s family home.

“The three lads hijacked the house and we had the craic,” Ray says.

“It was fun, and in the lead up to Christmas it’s the perfect tonic. It’s just a bit of craic and it’s free. It’s a present from us to everybody, and it’s there wherever you get your podcasts.

“It's just spreading a bit of festive fun and irreverence in the form of Dustin. He’s making shelves for the elves and they have to be endorsed by the North Pole because you can’t just put your elf on any auld shel.f It has to be a special shelf made by Dustin so he has poor Sinead Quinlan, the comedian, selling them down in Patrick Street in Cork.

“There’s also a call put into Santa because we are fearful about Christmas. Whenever we are together Christmas seems to be in jeopardy, so we put a call in to Santa and we get some sketchy character on the line, so you can guess who that is.

“And then there’s a carol singer who calls to the house and he’s a bit dodgy as well. There’s a lot of intrigue, so you have to listen to see if it works out ok. It’s a bit of fun. We’ve saved Christmas so many times we’ve lost count. Dustin is a bit bold on it and there’s a lot of slagging, and I’m the butt of most jokes, as you would expect.”

“If I ever get slagged by anybody else I say, ‘give me your best, I’ve been slagged by the world champion. I’m bullet proof.’”
