Hector Ó hEochagáin has open up about feeling “lonely” since the death of his mother in 2015.
The TV and radio personality lost his mum Triona suddenly in January 2015, after she died in her sleep.
His father passed away years before that, but Hector said his mother dying had a bigger emotional toll on him.
Speaking to Doireann Garrihy on her Laughs of Your Life podcast, the 51-year-old said: “I’m lonely now because I’ve lost my mum and my dad. I felt lonely since I lost my mum suddenly a couple of years ago and my dad had died 30 years before that.
“I feel lonely that I’ve lost my mother, my Irish mother. It’s a different feeling from losing your dad.
“Even though my mum makes me happy when I think of her, I’m sad that I’ve lost my mum. I feel lonely, it’s a hard thing to explain.”
He explained that his mum did everything for him and his brothers at home.
“It’s different circumstances in every household but my mother was the one who reared us, my mother did everything.
“My mother celebrated every single thing that I ever did from buying my first nice car, from buying a Fiat Punto to a brand-new Mercedes. My mother started crying when she saw me with a Mercedes.
“[She said] ‘I never thought we’d ever have a Mercedes in the house.’ And when she said stuff like that to me, I think I made her proud.”
Hector opened up about what he missed the most about his mother, sharing: “I miss her sense of humour, and she had such a strong faith in the Lord. I swear to God did she love the man above.
“And I think our generation and the next generation, we will never understand the power that faith has for so many of our parents and our grandparents. She got so much humour, solace, and strength from the man above.
“She was an amazing woman, a West of Ireland woman,” he added proudly.
