Westlife singer Nicky Byrne has wished his father-in-law Bertie Ahern a happy 70th birthday.

The former Taoiseach celebrated his milestone birthday on Sunday.

Taking to Instagram over the weekend, Nicky – who is married to Bertie’s eldest daughter, Georgina Ahern – shared some snaps with his father-in-law to mark the occasion.

In the first photo, the pair can be seen enjoying a family meal together as Bertie models a Planet Hollywood baseball cap.

The second photo shows Nicky helping the former Fianna Fáil leader out in the garden.

Bertie is fond of gardening and has said before that growing flowers and vegetables is one of his favourite activities, after spending time with his family and friends.

Cleverly captioning the sweet post, Nicky wrote: “Happy 70th Bertie – Bertie,” and included the hashtags #Grandad #FatherInLaw.

The boyband star married his secondary school sweetheart in August 2003 with a romantic ceremony in France’s Loire Valley.

The pair got together when they were just 16 years old after meeting when they were both pupils at Pobalscoil Neasain in Baldoyle, North Dublin in 1991.

They share three children together: twin sons Jay and Rocco, who were born in 2007, and one daughter, Gia, who arrived in 2013.

Nicky recently admitted that spending time with his family over lockdown gave him the “strength to keep on going.”

The Westlife star would usually spend his time in the studio or on tour, but lockdown afforded him the opportunity to stay at home with the clan.

Speaking about how quarantine strengthened his marriage, the Dubliner said: “It’s brilliant and as strong as ever, we’re madly in love and we always will be.

“It’s been great, getting to spend time with the kids and G has been brilliant, particularly after coming back from the year-long tour.

“All is well at home. You need that base and that strength to keep you going and thankfully I have that,” he added.
