Ireland AM’s Muireann O’Connell has admitted that it was “really hard” trying to date in her 30s.

The 37-year-old has been loved up for some time now but said that she struggled to enjoy life as a singleton as people constantly offered her unsolicited advice.

Earlier today, matchmaker and dating specialist Mairéad Loughman appeared on Ireland AM to chat about dating during the pandemic and how tough it’s been for single people.

Muireann weighed in on the topic and spoke about the frustration she felt when people told her she’d find love one day.

“I always remember people saying to me, ‘It’ll happen when you least expect it,’ and I thought it was the most patronising thing in the world,” the Limerick native shared.

“I was like, ‘Would you stop saying that thing to me.’ It can be really hard how you’re treated when you are single as you get older. Like in your 20s, loads of your mates are single, but in your 30s...

“The semantics around it and friends talking to you about it, that can almost wreck your head more than the actual dating situation,” she added.

In July, Muireann was whisked away by her mystery man – who she fondly refers to as her ‘housemate’ - for a romantic trip away to Limerick’s Adare Manor.

Taking to her Instagram Stories at the time, she updated her followers about the surprise and wrote: “Driving to holidays… where? I don’t know. Housemate picked a hotel for the night and won’t tell me which one. Not great with surprises so I won’t stop asking questions. He won’t answer. Defo not gonna be speaking by the time we get there.”

However, the Virgin Media star was then inundated with messages asking if the pair had gotten engaged and had to set the record straight.

“I am NOT getting engaged. Especially with the half scraped off shellac... Very prepared for holidays,” she said as she held up her ring-less hand.
